Living in Spain as an EU Citizen
No visa, no waiting months for approval. As an EU or EEA citizen, you have the right to live and work in Spain freely. Here's exactly what you need to do.
🎉 No Visa Required — Ever
Citizens of EU member states and EEA countries (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) plus Switzerland have the automatic right to live, work, and stay in Spain indefinitely under EU freedom of movement. You only need to register after 3 months of continuous stay.
3 Steps to Official Residency
Complete these in order — each one unlocks the next
Get your NIE
Número de Identificación de Extranjero
The NIE is your tax identification number in Spain — you need it for almost everything: opening a bank account, signing a lease, buying a car, or registering for healthcare.
- 1Book an appointment at the nearest Oficina de Extranjeros or Comisaría de Policía (use citapreviainem.es or sede.policia.gob.es)
- 2Bring your valid EU passport or national ID, completed EX-18 form, and proof of reason for stay
- 3Pay the Tasa 790 fee (around €10) at a bank before your appointment
- 4Your NIE is issued the same day — it's a green card with your number
Book your NIE appointment before you arrive if possible — slots fill up fast in large cities.
Empadronamiento
Municipal Registration
Registering with your local Ayuntamiento (town hall) is mandatory if you plan to stay more than 3 months. Your Padrón certificate unlocks access to healthcare, schools, and other public services.
- 1Go to your local Ayuntamiento with your passport/ID and proof of address (rental contract or utility bill)
- 2Fill in the Hoja de Empadronamiento form (available at the office)
- 3Receive your Certificado de Empadronamiento — keep multiple certified copies
- 4Renew annually or whenever you move to a new address
Your landlord must be willing to empadronar you. Include this requirement when searching for housing.
CRUE / Certificado de Registro
EU Citizen Registration
If you plan to stay in Spain for more than 3 months, you must register as an EU resident. This gives you an official green certificate confirming your right to live in Spain.
- 1Apply at the Oficina de Extranjeros or Police station (appointment required)
- 2Bring: valid EU passport/ID, NIE, Empadronamiento certificate, proof of sufficient financial means (bank statements or employment contract), and EU health insurance or Spanish health card
- 3Pay the Tasa 790 fee at a bank
- 4Receive your Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión
The CRUE doesn't expire, but you'll need to update your address via Empadronamiento whenever you move.
